Lillias White Bio

Lillias White was born in Brooklyn, New York and won Broadway’s 1997 Tony Award as Best Actress (Featured Role – Musical) for her portrayal of a hooker in The Life. She understudied the role of “Effie” in the original 1981 production of Dreamgirls and later played the part in the 1987 revival. Ms. White received Broadway’s Prestigious Quadruple Crown for her role as “Sonja” in the musical The Life: (1) People’s Choice Award, (2) Outer Critics Award for Best Actress in a Musical, (3) Drama Desk Award and (4) Tony Award for best featured actress in a musical. She also won an Emmy Award for her role as Sesame Street‘s “Lillian Edwards”. Ms. White was also nominated for a 2006 NAACP Theatre Award for Best Lead Female (Equity) for Like Jazz at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles. As a film actress, she is known for Hercules (1997) and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000).
